Abstract
The present investigation was undertaken to evaluate the table purpose suitability of six hybrids and seven varieties of potato grown in Chambal region of Madhya Pradesh based on their quality characteristics. The experiment was carried out in the Research Farm of ICAR-Central Potato Research Institute- Research Station, Gwalior, (MP) during the year 2019-20 in rabi season at Randomized Block Design with three replications. Potato tuber characteristics included tuber shape, tuber skin color, depth of eye, flesh color, number of eyes on tuber, tuber length and tuber diameter, which are important for processing, marketing as well as for table purposes. Potato is an important vegetable crop is highly variable in shape and color. From the result, it was concluded that variations existed among different hybrids and varieties of potato with respect to quality characteristics of tubers. Among the treatments hybrid P-36 /J/ 8-91 was round-oval shaped tubers but having shallow-medium deep eyes. Shallow type of eyes were observed in hybrids P-27/J/-05, P-31/J/7-37, P-40/J/8-85, Kufri Garima, Kufri Mohan and Kufri Ganga. Maximum number of eyes on tubers was recorded in Kufri Lauvkar(11) among different treatments which led to the production of more number of tubers and higher total tuber yield. Six hybrids and seven varieties showed non-significant differences in lengths and diameters of tubers at 60, 75 DAP and at senescence. These findings suggested that three hybrids, P-27/J/-05, P-31/J/7-37, P-36/J/8-91 and three varieties, Kufri Lauvkar, Kufri Pukhraj, Kufri Khyati possessed desirable attributes making them suitable for table purpose consumption and farmers fetch better market prices with ensuring a reliable supply of table potatoes to meet the growing demand.
