Computed Radiographic Evaluation of Liver Volume to Body Weight Ratio in Deep Chested Dogs

Abstract
The present study aimed to evaluate the computed radiographic liver volume-to-body weight (LV:BW) ratio in deep-chested dogs. A total of 90 apparently healthy dogs representing six deep-chested breeds underwent thoraco-abdominal computed radiography. Linear radiographic measurements, including liver length, thoracic depth, and thoracic width, were used to calculate liver volume using a standard formula. The LV:BW ratio (30.72 cc/kg) was evaluated in relation to age, sex, body weight, breed, and neutering status. Significant differences were observed among groups classified by age, sex, body weight, breed, and neutering status (p ≤ 0.05). Older dogs showed a higher radiographic liver volume-to-body weight ratio, whereas the 3-6-year age group showed a lower ratio. Male dogs showed a higher liver volume-to-body weight ratio than females. Dogs in higher body weight groups showed higher liver volume-to-body weight ratios than those in lower body weight groups. Breed-specific variations were also noted, with higher ratios in Belgian Shepherds and German Shepherds and lower values in Great Danes and Siberian Huskies. Intact dogs exhibited higher liver volume ratios than neutered dogs. It was concluded that the LV:BW ratio is a reliable, breed-dependent tool with diagnostic potential in veterinary radiology.
